2007 Barolo, Le Vigne, Luciano Sandrone, Piedmont, ItalyThe 2007 Barolo Le Vigne presented a beguiling combination of explosive, ripe fruit and finessed silky tannins, making it a thrilling wine to taste, even at this stage in its development. Small red berries, minerals, crushed flowers, vanillin and sweet spices are woven together in a fabric of indescribable elegance. The French oak has never been better balanced, while the vibrant, crystalline finish leaves a lasting impression.
The 2007 Le Vigne has all the potential to develop into a spectacular wine; it already is. This is a stunning bottle of Barolo. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2027. Luciano Sandrone’s wines have never been more elegant than they are today. The French oak is increasingly well balanced, and the at-times excessive heaviness of some prior vintages is long gone.
Simply put, Luciano Sandrone is at the top of his game.
Never one to be satisfied, this year Sandrone showed me several experimental wines, including a barrel sample of 2009 Barolo Le Vigne vinified with 100% stems, an approach that is virtually unheard of in Piedmont. Although this wine will ultimately be blended into the Barolo Le Vigne, the all-stems Barolo was huge, explosive, and compelling. Sandrone fans have much to look forward to, as the 2008s and 2009s appear promising at this early stage. As for the 2007s, they are off the charts.

2022 Régnié, Domaine de Vernus, Beaujolais
The nose has lovely aromatics of strawberry and cream alongside a striking wet stone freshness. The palate is linear with good tension which balances the 14% alcohol. Fresh strawberries combined with ripe chalky tannins gives this Regnie a lovely balance. 100% destemmed, lovely.

2013 Barolo, Brunate, Marcarini, Piedmont, Italy
Possessing more overt fruit and body than the 2012, this Brunate, layers toasted nuts with cherry and savoury graphite and tar notes. Amazing grip and clean acidity underpin the dense, ripe fruit on the core of the wine. Contained power. Drink from 2025+.

2018 Chianti Classico, Riserva, Badia a Coltibuono, Tuscany, Italy
The 2018 Chianti Classico Riserva is floral, ethereal and nicely lifted. Sweet pipe tobacco, cedar, mint, dried flowers and leather give the 2018 terrific aromatic presence. This mid-weight Riserva drinks well now, but also has enough energy to develop positively in bottle for at least a handful of years.

2017 Montrachet, Marquis de Laguiche, Grand Cru, Joseph Drouhin, Burgundy
Through their contract with Marquis de Laguiche, Drouhin manages an astonishing 2.1 hectares of Montrachet (out of eight hectares), which means they have a mind-boggling 28 barrels this year. As usual at this level, words fail: the dial is on 11 for richness, intensity and voluptuous freshness. Drink 2030-2050.
An extensive tasting with Jérôme, who has been at Drouhin 14 years, gave a very useful insight into the style and developments here. In particular, the reds are moving towards a riper, more succulent style, driven by a high level of grape sorting, including an optical sorter, and the ambition to use 25 to 30 percent wholebunch, or more if the vat needs filling. The wines go to barrel turbid and are not racked until the end of their time in bottle. They are also harvesting later. The Clos des Mouches was not harvested until 20th September, long after their neighbours. -
2009 Clos Monlleó, Celler Sangenís i Vaqué, Priorat, Spain
If you're interested in how Priorat wines age, this blend of Garnacha and Carignan is an excellent way to find out. Deep cherry colour, with lots of aromas of rich blackberries and plum cake on the nose with a touch of earthiness. Whilst the palate seeks powerful notes of cassis, stewed fruits, leather, chocolate, and liquorice to follow with a sweet spicey finish and an impressive length. It is wonderfully enjoyable at this stage of life.

2021 Bourgogne Blanc, Domaine Sébastien Magnien
Anyone looking for a refreshing and energetic expression of white Burgundy would do well to choose Sébastien Magnien's Bourgogne Blanc. It is a delightfully crisp and saline Bourgogne Blanc, made entirely in barrel from 30-year-old vines in the Hautes-Côtes. There is even a touch of sophistication from the struck-match reduction on the nose.

2022 Côte de Nuits Villages, Patrice & Maxime Rion, Burgundy
Two thirds comes from their normal grape purchases to which is added a plot of Aux Leureys, recovered as part of the Daniel Rion inheritance. A rich even purple. Lifted raspberry fruit, not too dark, then a bundle of dark red cherries on the palate. Just fills the mouth out a little more than the very fine Bons Batons. Good length, a Côte de Nuits-Villages of considerable charm.

2011 Contino, Gran Reserva, Rioja, Spain
Vivid ruby-red. Displays expansive, smoke-tinged red fruit preserve and cherry-vanilla scents, along with vanilla, tobacco and allspice flourishes. Seamless and appealingly sweet, offering concentrated cherry, blackcurrant and spicecake flavors that tighten up slowly on the back half. The smoky note repeats on the sweet, seamless and impressively long finish, which features rounded tannins and lingering vanilla and mocha qualities.

Aromas of orange oil, wheat toast, pear and white flowers preface the 2018 Bourgogne Blanc Murgey de Limozin, a new lieu-dit bottling from Pierre Boisson that's medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with a fleshy and generous profile reflecting its location not far from Meursault Charmes.

2022 Morgon, Domaine de Vernus, Beaujolais
The grapes here come from two parcels; l'Eveque, which Frederic sold in 2024, and Champs Levrier which will become the main source of grapes for this label going forwards. The nose is perfumed and boasts of violets and fresh cassis. On the palate, the same cassis is precise and full of freshness combined with well-integrated chalky tannins. Good balance and length and lovely integration of wood.

The vineyard is farmed by Benjamins right-hand man, Jean-Charles Carr, and the Clos de la Cave des Ducs is the epitome of perfectly balanced Volnay not massive but with an exquisite delicacy of red and black fruit and great persistence.

2018 Anjou, Grolleau, Clau de Nell, Loire
The 2018 Val de Loire Grolleau opens with a light reduction on the nose that is clear, fresh and spicy, with fresh raspberry, blackberry and elegant flinty aromas. Silky, fresh and elegant on the palate, this is a fleshy, sweet, silky-textured but generous red with fine tannins and a sleek, crystalline and concentrated tart finish. It needs some time, but this is excellent and generous. Tasted in June 2021.
Located 24 kilometres west of Saumur in Ambillou-Château in the very east of the Anjou appellation and almost bordering the Saumur AC, the 10-hectare Domaine Clau de Nell, purchased by Anne Claude Leflaive and her husband Christian in 2008 and today managed by winemaker (and shareholder) Sylvain Potin, offers a small but fine range of white and red wines from one block with a homogenous soil of clay, silex and sandstone, the latter gives the wines their characteristic energy and tension.
The organically farmed, south-facing and wind-exposed vineyards are about 100 meters above sea level and are surrounded by forests, grassland, grain fields and a tree farm, which gives a large natural diversity and protection against pollution.

2022 Moulin-à-Vent, Les Vérillats, Domaine de Vernus, Beaujolais
Frederic only uses a horse to work this vineyard and the grapes are 100% destemmed. The nose exhibits succulent aromas of roses and bright strawberry, some Pinotage here! Great tension on the palate coupled with a lovely salinity and velvety tannic structure. This is utterly delicious.

2014 Champagne Ayala, No. 14, Rosé, Extra Brut
The nose is layered with delicate floral notes and hints of cherry. The palate is incredibly bright and vibrant, with bundles of pink grapefruit and blood orange encompassed in a lively mousse. With the blend favouring Chardonnay, there are hints of tropical fruits too. This is drinking wonderfully now and will age well over the next six years.
